I love histology, classifying and characterising what we see, and linking structure with function – not surprising for a former structural biologist. Histology is the link between the world of biomolecular structure and the anatomy of the body. In Medicine, the subject is incredibly important and comes up everywhere, in pre-clinical physiology, pathology, and later in clinical pathology.
1st year: Histology of Healthy Tissues
When I started studying this subject, I was looking for a simple but structured overview describing the appearance of the different tissue categories and types. I looked through a range of text books but could not find it anywhere, so I made it myself. Looking at pictures of histology slides in combination with this presentation should help you to easily identify the most common tissues in the body. For pictures, I recommend Wheater’s atlases of histology and later on pathology.
